Strategies for Successful Writers
|
Boulder Valley Schools follow the First Steps Writing program and
resources from 6 Traits Writing. Teachers provide students with authentic
writing situations so that children learn to write and write to learn.
Second graders will develop a wide range of writing strategies and
skills as they work together to analyze the structure and organization
of text, focus on language appropriate for their writing, and construct/modify
consistent rules for their writing. Teachers introduce writing activities
using by using the following formula:
PURPOSE + AUDIENCE = FORM
Before our daily writing, we work as a class to agree on our purpose for
writing and our audience. These details dictate the form we use. By addressing
this formula before we write, we can adjust the language we use and the format,
and know that our writing has a specific purpose. Here are a few quick examples
of our writing FORMula:
| Purpose | + | Audience | = | Form: |
| Requesting a new lunch item | | Lunch Lady | | Letter |
| Describing a recess game | | Second Graders | | Procedure |
| Re-telling winter break | | Teacher/friends | | Recount |
| Remembering shopping items | | Self | | List |
| Asking about Superior | | Principal | | Letter or Q/A |
| Alaskan animal facts | | Learners/travelers | | Report |
| Working out feelings | | Self/others | | Journal |
