Monochromatic Self-portrait Triptychs !!!

By: 5th Grade

Students used mirrors to draw a contour line drawing of their self-portrait in a three-quarters pose. They transfered their images three times onto white paper to make a triptych. They used the three primary colors to create three monochromatic (one color) paintings mixing tints (color + white) for highlights and shades (color + black) for shadows. Their goal was to create enough contrast in their painting to not lose their image's details. After the paint was dry, the students outlined the original drawings with black marker. We mounted it on colored paper and students finished them by writing a reflective border!

Los Dias de Los Muertos (Days of the Dead)

The Great Painting Challenge

Students were given the Great Painting Challenge of 2009! Students divided their papers with different organic black lines and then were asked to fill the shapes they made with different colors! They were given only the primary colors (red, yellow, blue) and black and white. They had to make as many colors as possible, experimenting with shades (color + black) and tints (color + white). They could only use the same color twice and had to make enough colors to fill all their spaces. In the end, we created abstract master pieces!

Andy Warhol Pop Art Portraits

Students studied world famous Pop artist Andy Warhol. We discussed his use of repetition to place importance on the image. Students then created a self portrait that was duplicated four times on colored paper of their choice. We then color coded them with colored pencils.

Unity Poster Project

Students recreated vintage Colorado postcards using different enlargement techniques.
Each student was given a small piece of the postcard to enlarge on paper with colored
pencils. Once finished, we assembled the pieces on large paper and discussed how
working together creates “unity”, that each individual has their own style and when brought
together brings continuity to the finished poster.
