Gustav Klimt's "Tree of Life" Paintings

Students studied the artist Gustav Klimt and his rich & stylized paintings! The "Tree of life" was the
inspiration for our painting! Students began by drawing a stylized version of a tree filled with patterns.
Then we painted the background using a mixture of analgalous colors (colors next to each other on the color
wheel) and white. Students were instructed to leave the paint un-mixed for a more interesting background!
We then painted our trees with this really cool gold paint. We finished them by painting the patterns with
watercolor and re-outling to help pop them out!

Picasso Self-Portraits

Students studied the artist Pablo Picasso and his use of color and cubism. Students then sketched themselves using mirrors and combined two images (profile & front view) of themselves in one portrait. Students then used line to create interesting shapes (cubism) within their faces. Students colored each shape with oil pastels and then finshed them by watercoloring the background.

Keith Haring Figure Paintings

Students studied the paintings of Pop artist Keith Haring and his amazing, whimsical figures. We talked about
figure drawing, minimalism, and pop art and then students created a grid and drew figures inside! Students
were then asked to paint the negative space first (the background) and then the positive space (the foreground)
in bright beautiful colors! We finished them by adding Keith Haring's famous energy lines to give the figures movement! We mounted them on black paper for a nice frame!

Unity Poster Project

Students recreated vintage Colorado postcards using different enlargement techniques. Each student was given a small piece of the postcard to enlarge on paper with colored pencils. Once finished, we assembled the pieces on large paper and discussed how working together creates “unity”, that each individual has their own style and when brought together brings continuity to the finished poster.
