Shapes & Owls
Students studied the many different shapes and then we talked about combining shapes to create drawings. We realized that you can draw just about anything if you just connect the shapes in different ways! We then used our shapes to create owls. After sketching them out, students outlined with markers and then colored them with crayons!

Frederick Remington Horse Drawings
Students studied the paintings of Frederick Remington and discussed what makes a picture a "western". We then traced our hands and turned them into horses by adding a mane and a tail. Students added a background and outlined in black marker. We finished them by adding color!

African Ndebele Symmetric House Paintings
We began this lesson by reading Maya Angelou's book "My Painted House, My Friendly Chicken, and Me" based on the Ndebele Tribe in South Africa. We then discussed symmetry and color mixing which led us to create our own African painted houses just like in the book!

IN THE CLASSROOM!!

Mary Cassatt Family Portraits
Students learned about famous artist Mary Cassatt and her beautiful family portraits. Students were then asked to create their own family portraits. First, we sketched out our families, paying close attention to draw them realistically. Then students colored them with oil pastel and watercolored the background. We finished them by adding a pattern border in colored pencils and markers.

Henri Rousseau Jungle Drawings:
Students studied artist Henri Rousseau and his jungle paintings. We practiced drawing our own jungles and then colored them in with oil pastels. We finished them by glueing animal print borders on the edges!

Ceramic Pinchpots
Students learned about ceramics and and glazing! We created pinchpots with our red rock clay and after they
were fired in the kiln, students glazed them with our special cone 05 glazes!
