Kindergarten
Whittier Kindergarteners are introduced
to French through French songs, counting in French, the colors in French,
and a few French phrases.
First Grade
First grade students practice
saying the calendar and weather in French on a daily basis. French language
is incorporated in their daily instructions and routines. First graders
also receive a half hour of French instruction each week from first grade
teachers, where they explore French vocabulary related to our IB units
of inquiry as well as grammar.
Second Grade
On a daily basis, second graders
practice saying the calendar and weather in French. Second graders also
learn and sing French songs in class. Second grade students also are exposed
to French vocabulary and common phrases through mini-lessons taught by
volunteers from the university or parents.
Third Grade
Third graders work on French
in their classrooms by using an interactive video series called Muzzy.
They also work on conversations, the calendar, the colors, and songs in
French. Other topics include weather, transportation, verbs (playing,
running, reading, etc.) and clothing in French.
Fourth Grade
The fourth graders count in French
for attendance and say the calendar and weather in French on a daily basis.
A parent volunteer provides forty minutes a week of French instruction.
The fourth graders are introduced to French culture, French songs, and
French words and phrases.
Fifth Grade
The fifth grade includes French in
their daily written schedule boards. Fifth graders also learn vocabulary
& phrases in these categories: food (and school lunch menu), body
parts, adjectives, colors, greetings, numbers, things in the classroom,
cognates, and miscellaneous vocabulary that gets integrated at various
times. The fifth grade also does French songs from time to time. And of
course, we have a resident bichon frise ~ Sylvie ze French chien!
