TEACHER INFORMATION
First Grade Teachers
Sherri Luna
I've taught in Boulder Ally for 18 years: 13 years at Lafayette Elementary, 4 years at High Peaks, and this is my second year at Whittier.  I've taught 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th grades, but 1st grade is my favorite. I love to teach children how to read, and students are so eager to risk and try new things at this age.  I really enjoy working with a top-notch staff, a strong leader, and with a diverse student body.  I speak some French (for IB) and a few classroom Spanish phrases

Cindy Bigelow and Laura McCloskey
We feel that one of the greatest strengths is that there are two of us generating ideas and bringing creative energy to the class.  We try to build a "family" feeling in our class where everyone, parents as well as students, feels valued and appreciated and an important part of the team.  We enjoy incorporating the various backgrounds of our students in our curriculum and invite parents to share their knowledge and experience with the class.  We integrate all subject areas (reading/writing, math, science, social studies, drama, music, art and P.E.) whenever, possible on all of our thematic and IB units believing that it is important for students to see the interconnectedness of the world around them,.  We use manipulative and hands-on activities and incorporate many artistic projects as avenues of expression to enhance and enlarge the learning experience for First Graders.

John Le clair
John works as a first grade teacher for the first half of the day and he has his own Kindergarten class during the afternoon. He teaches two guided reading groups, one with Mrs. Luna's class and one with Mrs. Bigelow and Mrs. McCloskey's class. He also teaches all of the first graders spelling three days a week and French two days a week. We are so excited to have John as part of our first grade team.

FAMILY INFORMATION

Homework for Mrs. Bigelow's & Mrs. McCloskey's Class ~ Each day, you will bring home your special first grade book bag and inside will be a new library book that you have checked out.  For homework, please read the book or have someone read the book to you.  Bring the book back to school with you the next morning.  We will have a check-in system each morning, and you will check out another book to take home in the afternoon.

Note to Parents:  Your child has been asked to read the library book.  In some cases your child will actually be able to read the book to you.  However, in most cases, you will need to read the book first to the child.  Then perhaps you can re-read it with him or her and have the child supply words as you pause in your reading.

Periodically, we will send home math, social studies or science homework that relates to our unit of study.  Please do this homework on your own or with the help of parents.

Homework for Mrs. Luna's Class ~ Current homework includes reading at home and recording reading minute totals in the Home Reading Log each day.  The goal is to read at least 40 minutes per week.  Books should be read to the child, with the child, and by the child.  Also, fill in the Going Home Calendar daily.  Both of these forms are kept in the blue Homework Folder which is expected to travel and from school each day.

Beginning in October, a two-month Poetry/Sharing calendar will be sent home bi-monthly.  Each child will select a poem at school to memorize and recite on their designated Poetry/Sharing day.  Students are expected to learn the poem by heart and bring an item from home to share.

Periodically, small homework assignments will be sent home that tie into our units of study.  Each assignment will have a circled "HW" written on the top right corner, indicating that it is "Homework".  Complete and return as soon as possible or by the designated due date written on the top.
