CHESS
GOALS
.... Our primary focus is to provide an environment and materials for kids to enjoy the fun and benefits of chess. We have boards and pieces for them to play with in a quiet environment and at least one chess knowledgeable adult at every club meeting to help answer questions and provide some instruction and encouragement. ..... The primary emphasis will be on letting the kids play chess. We will also provide some instruction during the club sessions, especially for those who are new to the game. Two other forms of instruction will be (1) to provide some books for the kids to borrow and review and (2) provide links on this site to some instructional material. One site is simply a weekly puzzle (Puzzle of the week). Solving these kinds of tactical puzzles is a very good way to build one's chess skills. The other site (chesskids.com) has a series of lessons teaching the basics of chess. ..... If you're interested in a chess teacher, one place to start is http://www.chessforjuniors.com. He gives lessons over the internet. He also has a book on beginning chess called "Chess for Juniors" available on his website. It is also available at Barnes and Noble. .... The club is an official affiliate of the United States Chess Federation (www.uschess.org) and is entitled to all the priveleges thereof, including that of conducting nationally rated events. .....
Each year we provide opportunities for competition both within the club
(via a club ladder) and with other schools in tournaments. |
