Faith Ringgold Story Quilts
Students were introduced to Faith Ringgold and her amazing story quilts. After reading her book "Tar Beach", students sketched themselves on fabric flying over Boulder. We then colored them with crayons and framed them with pieces of fabric.

Winslow Homer Watercolor Landscapes
Students studied the art of Winslow Homer. We discussed horizon line and different ways to create a Colorado landscape. Students then used three watercolor techniques to paint their landscapes including: wet on wet, wet on dry, and dry on dry.

Matisse Still-lifes with Patterns
Students studied the artist Henri Matisse and his use of patterns. We made our own still-lifes with apples and created detailed backgrounds of different patterns. Students learned about overlapping, color theory, and painting techniques!

Students studied the "Blue Dog" paintings of New Orleans contemporary artist, George Rodrigue. We practiced drawing our own "blue dogs" and then colored them in with oil pastel. We then created elaborate backgrounds using watercolors and a wax resist.
