Strengths

and

Interests

I try to build a “family “ feeling in our class where everyone, parents as well as students, feels valued and appreciated and an important part of the team. I enjoy incorporating the various backgrounds of our students into our curriculum and invite parents to share their knowledge and experience with the class. I integrate all subject area (reading/writing, math, science, social studies, drama, music, art, and P.E.) whenever possible on all of our thematic and IB units believing that it is important for students to see the inter-connectedness of the world around them. I use many manipulative and hands-on activities and incorporate many artistic projects as avenues of expression to enhance and enlarge the learning experience for First Graders.

I actively welcome parent volunteers in the class and enjoy their participation in our activities. I have high expectations for all children and work very hard to enable every child to succeed academically and to the best of his/her ability. Nothing builds self-confidence like genuinely earned success.

Teaching

Background

I’ve taught in Boulder Valley for 19 years: 13 years at Lafayette Elementary, 4 years at High Peaks, and 2 years at Whittier. I’ve taught 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th grades, but 1st grade is my favorite since I love to teach children how to read, and students are so eager to risk and try new things at this age. I really enjoy working with a top-notch staff, a strong leader, and with a diverse student body. I speak some French (for IB) and a few classroom Spanish phrases.

Strengths

and

Interests

My passion and strength is teaching reading. In fact, I just completed my Masters Degree at CU in Literacy with a Reading Endorsement. I hold 3-5 “Phonics Nights” for parents each year to help parents better understand how we do reading, writing, and spelling at school. I feel that the more parents know about what we do at school, the better they are able to help their children at home. I like to work with parents as a cohesive team. I also thoroughly enjoy working with all of the diverse students here at Whittier and have been trained in intercultureskillfulness.

Teaming

Approach

I team with the other first grade teachers, Cindy Bigelow and John LeClaire. We formally meet once a week for in-depth unit planning. We coordinate our units of study, big class projects, and Field Trips. We also meet informally every day to support each other in all teaching areas.
