Boldereach
Water Vessel Project:
The Boldereach group came to Whittier to discuss the importance of clean
water in countries with little or no engineering. Students learned about
the women and children in Africa who use water vessels to bring water
many miles from their water source into their homes. Students then decided
to create their own water vessels to raise awareness for this important
issue. After a few demonstrations on how to create a water vessel, students
created their own vessels using clay coils. After a bisque fire, students
glazed their vessels to beautiful effect. We then had an amazing art night
on which this important issue was discussed and the vessels were on display!

Hokusai
Landscape Printmaking
Students studied legendary Japanese printmaker Hokusai.Students then created
their own printing plates by
glueing layers of cardboard together to create a Colorado landscape. Next,
students rolled ink onto their plates and
made several prints!
Check
out the 5th grade students working on their Hokusai Printing plates. Using
cardboard, students are working on creating a Colorado landscape from
which to make prints from.
Georgia
O'Keefe Flowers
Students studied the artist Georgia O'Keefe and her flower paintings.
Students observed her use of cropping and extreme closeups to accentuate
her own style. Students then created their own flowers using this style
of cropping and finished them with chalk pastels.

Students
studied the 3-D wall sculptures of contemporary artist Frank Stella. Students
then made their own wall art creating patterns with oil pastel and watercolor.
The challenge for students was to cut, glue, and manipulate the designs
in order to make them pop out like 3-D sculpture.
