Teaching

Background

After receiving an undergraduate degree in geology from Colgate University, and a Masters degree in Elementary Education from Lehigh University, I came to Boulder to officially begin my teaching career. I spent one year working in Special Education at Whittier, followed by three years teaching second grade at High Peaks. In 1997, I returned to Whittier, and have been teaching fifth grade ever since. I have my National Board Certification as a Middle Childhood Generalist.

Strengths

and

Interests

Music is my passion. I play piano, cello, trumpet, and am currently a serious classical guitar student. I love all sports, travel, art, reading, speaking French, and cooking. I have been fortunate to have traveled in many European countries, as well as Costa Rica, Mexico, Canada and China. My favorite books of the last ten years: Life of Pi, Three Cups of Tea, Water For Elephants, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. I am also an origami fanatic. I make origami jewelry, and run origami camps in the summer.

Teaming

Approach

I believe in total teaming: this includes parents, volunteers, student teachers, and students as well as specialists - all as part of our team. We work to create an interdependent community of learners who share a love of learning, and understand the power of collaboration.

Leslie Cumming -

Teaching

Background

I earned my BA in Elementary Education from Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO. My MA in Education: Learning and Teaching is from Regis University in Denver, CO. I have taught kindergarten, bilingual first grade, and fifth grade in Basalt and Boulder Colorado. Inquiry learning has always been at the foundation of my learning/teaching philosophy. I am National Board Certified as a Middle Childhood Generalist. I am thrilled to be part of the Whittier International School family!

Strengths

and

Interests

I love teaching, and am especially interested in science and social studies because all the rest of the curriculum can be integrated into these disciplines. My hobbies include reading, hiking with my dogs, skiing, music, (I play the cello and all the recorders) and riding my bicycle around Boulder. I have traveled to Europe and Central America as well as throughout Canada (my home country) and the US (my adopted country.)

Teaming

Approach

My belief in total teaming mirrors Lise’s. Together we are all supporting and creative members of the learning community and each of us contributes to its success. The more we work together and collaborate, the better school will be for our students. I am excited to be part of the strong team effort at Whittier.
