In the Primary Years Programme, this
component is not as explicitly defined as at the upper levels. However,
informed action, growing out of student initiative to take responsibility,
is cultivated. Creativity is one of twelve student attitudes given special
emphasis throughout PYP work. CAS stands for Creativity, Action, and Service.
Creativity is imaginative and original thinking and problem solving about
current issues. Action can be done simultaneously with Service and Creativity,
and is the physical aspect of the program. Service is social work completed
by the student for the general embetterment of the universe in the new
global society which is replacing the old order of things.
Student participation outside the classroom
is the focus of this element of the IB. It draws together the three broad
areas of co-curricular activity. Within its parameters, students will
have considerable freedom to choose their own pursuits. Students keep
records of their participation and reflect upon what they have learned.
